Craft not Graft

Craft not Graft

Training Insights

Make no mistake, it’s not graft, it’s craft….The craft is to make what is hard, easy!

Do it the easy way, not the hard way.

We choose the hard way because we believe it needs to be hard. We’ve got all this information in our brain courtesy of other people.

Even in coaching circles, we put the bar in front of athletes and tell them, here is the height of the bar and you’d better fucking clear it if you want to succeed.

There is a latent threat subconsciously running the show in all of us that we were taught at an early age.

It’s the threat of failure to meet that bar. It’s a philosophy of hard graft. So there is this tightness that comes with it.

Coaching is, for the most part, centered around the graft, not the craft.

Make no mistake, it’s not graft, it’s craft….The craft is to make what is hard, easy!

So, if you can teach yourself to find your ground, your emptiness and find your silence in it, you begin to provide space for what is challenging.

My message to you as a coach for 25 is this: Find your ease in it!

Find your silent, salient edge….Melt, transform, transmute into the space in which this pain rises.

Now, forget the threat. Here’s the potent action you need to take to make this a success:

Meet it head on….Soften the suck, keep quiet, just stay neutral to the pain and discomfort.

The harder it gets, the more silent you become.

This is the most potent piece of coaching advice I could ever share. This is not ethos, this is not philosophy or threat, this is the power of your own presence being brought to bare.

I’m telling you straight; learn how to respond in silence rather than react in noise.

There is so much waste in haste. Slow down, feel it in your silence, invite it with your non-reaction.

Be a lion. It’s the lion's silence that makes it dangerous, not its roar.
