High Performance Triathlon Coaching: Breaking Free from Cookie-Cutter Training

Training Insights

Move beyond textbook coaching. Connect with athletes on a deeper level. Create champions by breaking free from rigid systems.

Twenty fours years of coaching elite triathletes has taught me one crucial truth: great coaching flows from instinct, not instruction manuals.

I've worked with world champions and first-timers alike. Each athlete arrives with unique needs, personalities, and potential. Cookie-cutter training plans crush that potential. They force square pegs into round holes and turn lions into kittens.

My approach? Stay present. While other coaches obsess over historical data and "best practices," I focus on what's happening right now, with this athlete, in this moment. Science matters, but!, human connection matters more. Without genuine relationships, there's no transfer of knowledge or understanding.

Think about traditional coaching models. They're built on rigid structures, endless metrics and the assumption that what worked before will work again. But excellence doesn't emerge from copying the past – it comes from creating the future.

Your success as an athlete flows through you, not from external force. My role isn't to break you down and rebuild you in my image. It's to create a safe container where your unique talents can flourish. Where you have the audacity to chase audacious goals.

This requires courage from both coach and athlete. The courage to trust instincts over spreadsheets. The courage to adapt programs to athletes rather than forcing athletes to fit programs. The courage to admit when we don't know something and seek answers together.

I don't wear every hat. I'm not trying to be your nutritionist or biomechanist all at once. I focus on what I do best: observing, connecting and guiding you toward your own power. When we need specialist expertise, we bring in experts. Simple.

Great coaching isn't about complexity – it's about clarity. Not about control – but about creating space. Not about forcing change – but about fostering growth.
