At the end of the day, no one really gives a shit whether you win, place or draw.
At the very least, it will be talked about and quickly forgotten. People are generally far too busy with their own problems to be bothered about yours, and even if they are, it’s usually only because it takes the heat off them for a moment.
If you focus on that, there’s a real sense of freedom in it. So many people pull back from really being seen because of their fear of failure in front of others.
This is a legit problem. I hear it again and again in the world of performance. That next level you are after is directly through all the parts of yourself that you avoid.
Here’s the thing, if you are going to do what you please, then you are going to have to let go of what you think pleases others.
Don’t expect that when you succeed people will be talking positively of you. They won’t, it’s a threat to them either way. They either fear the failure they see you in or fear the risk you took to succeed.
If you can really understand this, you can let it go. Many people walk around in this apathy trying to keep everyone happy by not shining, and they rob themselves of their own happiness.
What other people think of you is really none of your business.
Let them have their judgments and you just keep being you.
Your own expectations drop when you let go of the expectations of others.
Then you are free to do what you really need to do to make this shit work;
Focus!
